Guru Nanak  born as Nanak on 15 April 1469 – 22 September 1539), also referred to as Baba Nanak  was the founder of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His birth is celebrated worldwide as Guru Nanak Gurpurab on Katak Pooranmashi ('full-moon of the Katak'), i.e. October–November.

Nanak is said to have travelled far and wide across Asia teaching people the message of ik onkar (ੴ, 'one God'), who dwells in every one of his creations and constitutes the eternal Truth.^[3] With this concept, he would set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue.

ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥

सोचै सोचि न होवई जे सोची लख वार ॥

Socẖai socẖ na hova▫ī je socẖī lakẖ vār.

By thinking, He cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of times

ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਮੰਦਾ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਐਸਾ ਕੋਇ ॥

मरणु न मंदा लोका आखीऐ जे मरि जाणै ऐसा कोइ ॥

Maraṇ na manḏā lokā ākẖī▫ai je mar jāṇai aisā ko▫e.

Death would not be called bad, O people, if one knew how to truly die.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

नानक दुखीआ सभु संसारु ॥

Nānak ḏukẖī▫ā sabẖ sansār.

आखहि मंगहि देहि देहि दाति करे दातारु ॥

Ākẖahi mangahi ḏehi ḏehi ḏāṯ kare ḏāṯār.

Hukmai anḏar sabẖ ko bāhar hukam na ko▫e.

Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੬॥

सभना जीआ का इकु दाता सो मै विसरि न जाई ॥६॥

Sabẖnā jī▫ā kā ik ḏāṯā so mai visar na jā▫ī. ||6||
